Despite the delicate looking blooms, this tropical evergreen is easy to care for. It tolerates both low light and the dry conditions resulting from forced air furnaces. One of ProPlants’ best selling plants, the lily blooms from May to August, with the flowers lasting six weeks. The flowers unfurl white then turn to a lovely pale green with time. The glossy leaves keep the home warm and lush even after the flowers fade. Lily bulbs should remain in the soil year round. In fall, most growers cut the lilies back to ensure a good bloom the next spring. In climates where frosts come quickly, it’s best to keep lilies in a cool place inside the home surrounded by sawdust so the freezing process is not so rapid that it kills the bulb.
The Calla lily’s trumpet shape and waxy texture make it a favorite for gardeners and gift buyers alike. The Calla lily plant comes in pinks, yellows and whites, with white representing purity. They are common at weddings as well as funerals. Of all the lily plants, the yellow Calla lily is the best to send for birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. The bright trumpets are fascinating to examine and track in their life cycle. Recipients often replant these bulbs outside only to watch them grow to three to four feet in height. Calla lilies make a dramatic entry way or backyard landscape plant. Hostesses and others appreciate a gift of ProPlants’ Calla lilies because so many blooms come on one plant. Once the blooms fade, the remaining plant decorates the house.
Having evolved in marshlands, the Calla lily needs lots of water and nutrient rich soil. If you keep your lilies potted and indoors, changing the soil once a year is a good idea.
The Peace lily plant has a smaller bloom, which makes it an ideal sympathy flower. Peace lilies produce flowers even in low-light locations, such as a north-facing window. Of all the flowering house plants, this one works well for those without the proverbial “green thumb.” Adding a tapered wooden or large white pot tailors the gift to the occasion. The peace lily delivers a heartfelt expression of sympathy that recipients will remember for years.
Often, the peace lily makes a great indoor garden, especially when combined with other exotic plants. Growing to 16 inches tall, it adds height to the foliage display beneath it. Like the Calla lily, the Peace lily needs a lot of water. Misting and wiping the leaves of the lily plant helps it to thrive.
With their unfurling blooms, Easter lilies could qualify as the most dramatic of all lilies. Easter lilies represent both innocence and new life. A wonderfully fragrant flower, the Easter lily is commonly sent around the Easter holiday. It also works well as a sympathy plant. The Easter lilly is often a tradition in many Christian households during Easter.
