With over 30,000 varieties of orchids, it’s impossible to get bored with these colorful, interesting and exotic house plants. But the common misconception is that they die too quickly or are difficult to care for. People make this mistake often because orchids enter a dormant period during which they may appear dead. Really, energy is building up in the bulb so that this unique flowering plant can bloom again.
Most people are stunned to discover that orchid varieties have survived millions of years in harsh environments and that they are found on all continents but Antarctica. Botanists have even found orchids at the Arctic Circle! With so many varieties, one can find an orchids blooming in countries all over the world every month of the year. The most exotic orchids can sell for thousands of dollars per plant, but many are very reasonably priced. Even the cheap orchids, however, have a reputation of exclusivity that precedes them.
ProPlants has your best orchid care tips right here. Some growers assert that orchids thrive best in an environment of benign neglect. They typically thrive in bright but indirect sunlight in temperatures above 50 degrees. For watering, the key is to not let the orchids sit in any water. Make sure that water has been fully drained so that the roots are damp but there is no water dripping from the bottom. It is especially helpful to place orchid plants in a pot that has a hole in the bottom for the water to escape. Some growers even line the bottom of the orchid container with pebbles or sand to give the water a place to pool away from the dirt.
Dormancy time depends on the type of variety but most orchid plants remain dormant for several months before they bloom again. When the last flower drops, cut the stem halfway between base and top at an angle between the nodes for a possible re-bloom. If a re-bloom doesn’t happen within 45 days, cut the stem just above the base leaf for a new spike. During the winter months place your orchid on a North facing window ledge with no direct sun for 45 days or till new stem begins. Ideally the temperature must drop to 58 - 60F to force a new flower stem. Once a new stem begins, the orchid can be placed back in normal room temperatures for growing.
Make sure that the orchid is supported in an upright position (each of our orchids arrive with stakes and ties or clips for support) and with the right care, orchids can last for years or even decades. Believe it or not, there are even orchids brought from England in the 1800s that are still alive today.
